Need suscepible host, virulent pathogen & favourable environment. Goals of the pathogen: nutriion, survival growth & reproducion, disease reduced producivity & yield, etc. Efectors: proteins & other molecules secreted by plant pathogens to aid infecion of speciic plant species. Efectors are key to the alteraion of host structures & funcions during infecion. Basidiomycota is one of the two large phyla. Basidiomycota are highly specialized colonizers that develop biotrophic interacion with its host. Agaricomycoina: jelly fungi, branched fruiing bodies, consistency of jelly, many are somewhat rubbery & gelainous, when dried, become hard & shriveled, when exposed to water, return to their original form. Pucciniales: rust fungi, afects healthy & vigorously growing plants, so the infecion is limited to plant parts, aeciospores. Has unique ability infect all aerial parts of host (maize) Induces tumor formaion locally at the site of infecion. Penetrates epidermal then sub-epidermal cells, forming an interacion zone called the biotrophic interface.
