PHIL 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Wilt Chamberlain, Gated Community, Lockean Proviso
Document Summary
Right-wing theory: all that matters is capitalism etc. but we"re looking at how to best treat others as equals. Libertarian view: the free market is inherently just, and redistributive taxation is inherently wrong, a violation of people"s rights. Inherently: good within itself: we think it produces the greatest good, similar to utilitarianism. If we assume that each person is entitled to the goods they currently possess (their holdings), then a just distribution is simply whatever distribution results from people"s free exchanges. If whatever you have in your bank account is entitled to you, and you give some of it to someone it is only just if you gave it from free choice. Gated communities: perfectly safe and supported by community. If my goods are rightly mine, you have no entitlement to take it. 1st argument: the intuitive argument, i. e. wilt chamberlain.
