This is not our first encounter with skepticism. Pyrrhonian skepticism was primarily concerned with reasons, and how those reasons worked together to justify beliefs, and therefore knowledge. This led to two views of justification that were also concerned with reasons, and, ultimately the structure thereof. Recall that they refused to take a dogmatic position on anything- including their own position. As pointed out by pritchard, this form of skepticism is generally used as a argument rather than as a substantive position. That is, you"re not going to find many academic skeptics out and about philosophy conferences. It"s used to show when an account of knowledge can"t cut it. Next class, we"re going to look more closely at what pritchard calls the closure principle by looking at the work of descartes. But first, i want to clarify the difference between incredulity and skepticism which. Skepticism and incredulity are not the same thing, no matter how many internet memes suggest otherwise.
