Iris Young
Was a very sig. political theorist for 16 years (died 2006)
Justice and the politics of difference
Politics of difference
Gay lesbian act rights
The distributive paradigm
Young does not deny that distribution is part of the story of
“justice”. She denies that distribution is the start the end or the
totality of the question of “justice”
She thinks that deprivation is a problem of justice
The fact that people are starving and have no shelter are real
problems of justice…she wants to metaphorically extend that
observation
Two problems
1. Focus on distributive issues of justice focuses attention on things at
the expense of attention to social structure power and institutional
context
The distributive issues reduce things to be like money and
objects (like health care) you have to choose who gets the
treatment based on priority
2. Even when distribution-talk is metaphorically extended to consider
power rights opportunity or self respect reduces them to static and
non relational concepts
