Individuals vs. institutions: horizontal distrust: distrust individuals have of each other. E. g. distrust of your neighbour: vertical distrust: distrust individuals have of institutions, and distrust individuals have of individuals who represent institutions. E. g. distrust of the chief of police or distrust of the police in general. Consequences of distrust: for king, the consequences of distrust of white moderates include that it became apparent that direct action was necessary, direct action ultimately ended resistance on the part of white moderates.
