Document Summary

John stuart mill: a student of jeremy bentham and an original contributor to utilitarianism. He wrote one of the fi(cid:396)st fe(cid:373)i(cid:374)ist te(cid:454)t, (cid:862) u(cid:271)jugatio(cid:374) of wo(cid:373)a(cid:374). (cid:863) In following up the principle of greatest happiness he inevitably began to consider how the individual and the government should be related. In his essay on liberty he sets out to define 1) the relationship between the individual and any power that can be legitimately exercised over him, and 2) the limits that can be imposed on such power. Thus, individuals not only should be protected from the power of an officer of the state but also from the tyranny of the dominant opinion and feeling of the society. Liberty for the political subjects can be guaranteed in two ways: by recognition of certain immunities called political rights, by constitutional check which required the consensus of the governed.
