Strong central government republic governed by well-educated elites. Distrust of moneyed interest cities, banks, other moneyed interests. State rights more interested in state rights than federal rights. More coherent mass parties came with the extension of voting rights. Late 19th century poor white males could vote. Needed to mobilize masses of voters, parties became more institutionalized.
