The media are confronted with more dramatic change than most other sectors of society. Economic hardship, caused by dwindling advertising revenue, threatens the survival of many of the so-called legacy media (newspapers, magazines, television and radio). Meanwhile, technological change, delivered via the internet, has prompted readers and listeners to turn away from their traditional sources of news and information and to turn instead to such social media vehicles as. Next week, we will look at the influence for good or ill of social media on the public"s appreciation and understanding of developments in the world of politics. This week, we will consider the traditional, and continuing, role of the media in the political theatre and the relationship between journalists and politicians.
