Third sector: robert putnam (bowling alone)- decline in citizen participation in social, political and religious organizations. Third sector trends: canadian situation somewhat better, but still cause for concern, citizen needs increasing, fewer donations annual donations dropped for first time in. Defining the third sector: national survey of non-profit and voluntary organizations identify several criteria, non-governmental, non-profit distributing, self-governing, voluntary, formally incorporated, serve either the public or defined membership (ex. professional association, classified into four categories, funding agencies/intermediaries- ex. Business and professional associations: public benefit organizations- ex. Daycares, nursing homes, youth sports groups: religious organizations. Canadian situation somewhat better, but still cause for concern: citizen needs increasing, fewer donations, 80-20 rule (82% of donations from top 25% of donors, fewer volunteers, volunteering more hours, and more transitory involvement, intense competition for resources. Donor fatigue: wealthy are targeting donations to causes that affect/benefit them eg. healthcare, arts, organizations become more dependent on government.
