POLS 2300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Politicking With Larry King, Slacktivism, Collective Action
Document Summary
Special interest groups have limited influence on canadian politics. Lobbying in canada isn"t clandestine/corrupt/anti democratic practice it can be made. Protests/public demonstrations aren"t the only/most common forms of political. Pence = more dangerous, but focusing anger on trump because he"s the mouthpiece activism. Ex: people already starting to oppose trump in protest. Minority/pro-choice/immigration groups attacking him before even going to office. Ex: hamilton - pence went as private individual to see show, not to be argued with out to be. Good time for lobbyists: upset people spend money to get their position advocated for. Lobbyist/interest groups for gay rights/civil rights/pro-choice/etc. are walking up against a brick wall (government won"t be receptive in the slightest) Another way of influencing public policy/monitoring government behaviour is to mobilize supporters of a principle/belief to pressure elected officials. Interest groups: political organization that seeks to influence public policy without competing for election. Different governments are more/less receptive of certain interest groups.
