Lecture 3: the liberal tradition in african politics. Most african states became independent in 1961 and throughout the 60s and were released from colonial rule. The portuguese colonies were released later in the 1970s. Perspectives on africa: the liberal tradition, the critical tradition. Elements of the ideal modern state: democratic, developed, united, orderly, peaceful. On the human development index they are always at the bottom. Freedom house says most of africa is not free. Africa is consistently left behind on all development measurements. Says that africa itself is to blame for its lack of growth and appalling levels of poverty . Africa needs to look inside to see its problems and find solutions. Some are iconic but these are few and far between. Culture (one that saves and invests is lacking in africa) Primarily concerned with addressing africa"s internal problems (domestic)
