The rise and fall of the ottoman empire. After 1683, the empire is really on its defensive - starts to shrink and become weaker. European forces win over parts of land. Just getting poorer and poorer - wwi was its final blow. Fundamentally different - very distinctive features; its size and longevity. Known for managing ethnic conflict, peaceful empire and not marked by huge amounts of strike. Absolute monarch (sultan) at the head of a central administration. Central administration largely directed at the collection and maintenance of resources, particularly taxes. Did not bring in huge amounts of infrastructure. Military power; security - called the gunpowder empire" it was created out of concrete, main thing empire provided to its inhabitants was its security. Tax collection; changes in different parts of the empire - fair amount of respect for local traditions, but a very common way of collecting taxes was through tax farming. All the land was technically owned by the empire.
