Week 11 - from relief to sustainable development: sdgs. Achieving development through goals and targets: a recent history: the earth summit - 1992. Rio declaration, agenda 21: millennium declaration - 2000. Global conference on the achievements and emerging challenges since the earth summit of 1992: the sdgs - 2015. Seventeen sdgs: paris climate agreement - 2015. A universal and binding commitment to reduce ghg to limit the global temperature to 2c and ultimately 1. 5c above pre-industrial levels. The mdgs: 8 goals, 7 were implementable & the 8th not so much, eradicate extreme poverty and hunger (half it) this was accomplished. What"s wrong with mdgs: too expensive, they won"t work. Bureaucratic and therefore: lack accountability, create dependency, targets=inputs. They simplify and overstate the impact of aid: the myth of the big push, they"re misguided. They fail to address deeper structural issues. They simplify and understate the impact of policies, priorities and politics: they"re unethical. The 70s: the oil shocks (1973/79)
