Until the late 1960s, environmentalism was associated with a school of thought that attributed cultural and psychological traits to one"s physical environment. (e. g. the nature-nurture of debate, environmental determinism, eugenics). After the late 1960s, it became associated with a philosophy and political movement aimed at protecting nature. Rachel carson documents the extent of which ddt is in bird population, as well as human population. This captures the connection between human health and the concern about the environment. She made the case most forcefully and most poetically.
