2011 census statistics: 634 first nations reserves in canada, 2/3 in british columbia. Territory covers approximately 10,000 square miles: half the size of nova scotia. 675,485 individuals report being members of a first nation: approximately 50% live on reserves. Harvey mccue to many indians, reserves represent the last visible evidence that they were the original people of this country. Was part of the terms of the indian residential schools settlement agreement. Two broad mandates: provide the history and legacy of the church-run residential school system, guide and inspire a process of truth and healing, leading toward reconciliation. 99 calls to action to advance the process of reconciliation . The federal government was asked to redress multiple consequences of the residential school system: child welfare, education, language and culture, health. Key recommendations focus on governance and constitutional change: will not be readily accepted by the federal and provincial governments or society as a whole.
