Please read chapter 5 of the textbook from the beginning to the end of the section on biological variation and the section on relationship between validity & reliability . No obvious level distinguishes this cutoff and we would ideally like to choose a cutoff on the basis of biological info. That is, we want to know that a test result above/below the chosen cut off level is associated with an increased risk of subsequent disease. Unfortunately for many human diseases we do not have such info. The name comes from the fact that they are four cells created by cross tabulating a binary health/disease outcome and binary exposure.

Part II 1.The California Occupational Mortality study data set was employed to assess mortality data for the years 1979-1981. A 2% sample of employed persons from the 1980 census of California was used. It contains the occupation of each person who had died. This study, like any occupation-based study, is restricted to the work life span as far as age of subjects is concerned. This study used ages 16-64 years.
