65 views7 pages

Document Summary

Observational study designs are studies in which we do not actually intervene or change anything that is going on in the course of a person or animal"s life; we just observe them in their natural environment. We are going to look at three main types of observational studies: cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, case control studies. The objective of the unit is to understand the pros and cons of these different study designs and how to determine when to use each type. For example, you will understand which study design is best suited for a rare outcome (e. g. , lyme disease), which will be different from the type of study used for a rare exposure (e. g. , anthrax poisoning). We will also review some of the international standards for these studies, which will include how to conduct these studies and report the findings.
