POPM 4230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Infrared Lamp, Osmosis, Antibody
Document Summary
Piglet processing (do these when they are born) Takes about 1-2 days to be absorbed. Susceptible to iron deficiency anemia because they are not outside to root the natural sources in the environment. Can boost the iron in sow milk but still does not decreases the incidence. Fast growers, born with an iron reserve (50mg), they deplete that by 6-7 days of age. They do not absorb iron until they are about 3 weeks. Pigs in the wild are okay because they do not grow as fast (deplete reserve slower) plus high mortality rate. Sharp teeth used when fighting for teat. They establish a hierarchy in the first day of life. Once they get a teat, they will go for that teat in the whole 3 weeks. Very orally fixated, they like to chew on everything. Can create open wound to allow infection to go in, painful, welfare problem. Required to provide anti inflammatory or analgesics.
