*for ethical and practical reasons you can"t always do the experiment so you have to do a correlation study* Researcher measures one variable (x) . e. g. gpa. Researcher measures second variable (y) . e. g. success in graduate school. Researcher statistically determines if x and y are related. Important: variables are not manipulated just measured, not causation, goal is to determine if an association between variables exists. Is intelligence associated with creativity: finding an association may help us better understand how each is developed. Correlations are mathematically described by a correlation coef cient. Coef cient: ranges from -1. 0 + 1. 0, sign indicates direction (+ or -) As x is increasing, y is increasing. E. g. as height increases, so does weight. As x is decreasing, y is decreasing e. g. as sleep decreases, so does awareness. As x is increasing, y is decreasing. E. g. as alcohol consumption increases, ability to balance decreases. As x is decreasing, y is increasing.
