PSYC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Diazepam, Circadian Rhythm, Alpha Wave
Document Summary
Psych lec #7: biological rhythms of consciousness: wakefulness and sleep. Consciousness is a persons subjective awareness, including thoughts, perceptions, experiences of the world, and self awareness. Infradian rhythms is any rhythm that occurs over a period longer than a day. Ultraradian rhythms are frequent usually 90-120 minute cycles. Circadian rhythms- are internally driven daily cycles of approximately 24hours affecting physiological and behavioural processes. Entrainment- when biological rhythms become synchronized to external cues such as light, temperature or even a clock. Endogenous rhythms- biological rhythms that are generated by our body independent of external cues like light. Polysomnography- a set of objective measurements used to examine physiological variables during sleep. Electroencephalogram (eeg)- a device that measures brain waves using sensors attached to the scalp: waves are described by their frequency (number of up-down cycles) and amplitude (height and depth of the up down cycle). Beta waves are high frequency, low amplitude waves- characteristic of wakefulness.
