PSYC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Reward System, Reticular Formation, Limbic System
Document Summary
Consists of the brain and the spinal cord. Your personality, preferences, memories, and conscious awareness are stored in your brain which has approximately 100 billion individual neurons. The spinal cord receives info from the brain and stimulates nerves that extend out into the body; this stimulation produces movements. Receives info from sensory nerves and transmits it back to the brain. A division of the nervous system that transmits signals between the brain and the rest of the body and is divided into two subcomponents, the somatic system and the autonomic system. The autonomic nervous system: the portion of the peripheral nervous system responsible for regulating the activity of organs and glands, it includes the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Sympathetic nervous system: responsible for fight-or-flight response of an increased heart rat, dilated pupils, and decreased salivary flow-responses that prepare the body for action, sympathetic arousal. Blood is directed toward your skeletal muscles, heart rate and perspiration.
