A category of disorders involving fear or nervousness that is excessive, irrational, and maladaptive . Frequency and intensity of anxiety response is out of proportion to the situation: duration, degree, source. People think they are having a heart attack . Now they do not go to the grocery store . Moved from anxiety disorders to different sections in dsm-5: obsessive compulsive and related disorders. Psychological factors in anxiety disorders: cognitive explanations, maladaptive thought patterns and beliefs, things are appraised catastrophically". Learning explanations and social explanations: behaviours have been learned, some disorders are culturally bound, fear of offending someone, fear of being possessed, fear of being fat. Maladaptive behaviour is the problem, not a symptom. Maladaptive behaviour can be unlearned through: classical conditioning!, operant conditioning, social skill training (modeling)
