October 3, 2012 Module 18: Vision and Perceptual Organization and Interpretation Vision - we encounter waves of electromagnetic radiation Colour/Hue and Brightness - we perceive the wavelength/frequency of the electromagnetic waves as colour or hue The Eye - lens - pupil - iris - cornea - blind spot – the eye has no receptor cells at the place where the optic nerve leaves the eye - fovea - retina o light entering the eye triggers photochemical reaction in rods and cones at back of retina o chemical reaction in turn activates bipolar cells o bipolar cells then activate the ganglion cells, the axons of which converge to form the optic nerve – this nerve transmits info to the visual cortex in the brain Photoreceptors - rods and cones trigger chemical changes in the receptor cells when light reaches the back of the retina - rods – we see black and white - cones – we see colourful details in bright light Visual Information Processing - the images we “see” are not made of light, the
