September 26, 2012 Module 32: Motivation & Hunger Drives - hungry, thirsty tired, lonely, poor, dirty, cold, hot, in danger - all things that are unpleasant states to be in, and you have certain drives that motivate you to change them Homeostasis - a state of psychological equilibrium that the body strives to maintain Sensors - mechanical – stomach and intestinal digestion - chemical o nutrients  lipid  glucose o peptide hormones/neurotransmitters  PYY  Leptin  Insulin - Glucose sensors – when blood glucose levels decrease  Liver converts stored nutrients to glucose  Hypothalamus triggers hunger o Brain  Hypothalamus o Gut  Liver PYY - Released from: intestine - In response to: food intake - Received in: hypothalamus - Result: decrease hunger Ghrelin - Released from: stomach - In response to: absence of food - Received in: hypothalamus - Result: increase hunger September 26, 2012 Leptin - Released from: fat cells
