Move from sexual attachment to opposite sex parent to identity with same sex parent. Freud failed to recognize social and cultural factors. Organized, consistent set of perceptions and beliefs about oneself. Experience of being understood & valued gives us freedom to grow. Creates condition of worth fully functioning persons. Self-determined, sense of inner freedom, accept inner & outer experiences as they are. Freedom to make decisions and express opinions within guidelines.
