February 26, 2013 – PSYCH 2310 LECTURE (in reference to Chapter 9) Group Behaviour What is a group? - “ a group exists when two or more people define themselves as members of it and when its existence is recognized by at least one other (Brown, 2000).” o Group needs to recognized by others who are NOT members of the group – it gives legitimacy to the existence of the group – groups want to be recognized as a group, as a structure, who have goals. Group Elements - some central elements in conceptualization of a group: o common goal  something they all want to achieve – certain values they share. o Social structure  People have a role within a role – could be a hierarchical – a family could be an example o Face-to-face (or some form of) interaction o Self categorization  Define themselves as a group (the members say I am part of this group) – they categorize themselves Basic Group Processes - individualist o there is nothing more to group then understanding the individual that constitutes the group – want to understand the group? Understand the individual members that makes the group. (Not much North American research on group psychology. It’s more on psychology of the individual!) - collectivist o there is something more to a group than just the people who comprise it – Group psychology, tend to behave differently in a group. Your influence, behaviour and beliefs are influenced by the presence of others. We call this a collectivistic perspective. Group Structure - norms o norms are ways of specifying what are acceptable (or unacceptable) attitudes and behaviours of group members o central norms  restrictive – little tolerance to violate central norms  eg. murder – it has harsh consequence o general norms  expectations but more tolerance towards them – you can deviant from the expectation and that is still ok  eg. swearing – not suppose to but you will not go to jail for it February 26, 2013 – PSYCH 2310 LECTURE (in reference to Chapter 9)  eg #2. fashion/clothing – you can dye your hair purple and have a green cat suit on but you are not going to be kicked out of university for looking like that Functions of Norm - for individuals: norms are frame of reference to interpret the world, provides predictability and useful in novel situations - for group: norm serves as a social regulation that helps the group run smoothly and enhance group identity Group Socialization - three process of group socialization o evaluation o commitment o role transition Individual-Group Relation - group socialization have some assumptions o group exists over time and individuals move into or out of groups  the group exists longer (generally) than individuals within that group last o groups and individuals exerts reciprocal influence over each other  it’s not just the individual has influence on the group, something about this wholeness that has influence on the individual.  It highlights the assumption of collectivist group processes - Group socialization have five stages of group membership, separated by four role transitions o Tries to explain individual and group behaviour, emotion and cognition – what is happening during this process. o Group socialization tries to explain the moment a group accepts a new member, what happens until the time the group gets rid of, or the individual exits the group o Stages:  Investigation  Separated by entry between investigation and socialization)  Socialization  Separated by acceptance (between socialization and maintenance)  Maintenance  Separated by divergence (between m
