Most of what we do is in groups and units. A group exists when two or more people define themselves as member s of it and when its existence is recognised by at least one other. Needs to be recognized by another group who is not member of the group: other people need to validate the existence, for sense of identity. Gay movement they wanted majority of society to recognize them and see that it is important. Some cultural elements in conceptualisation of a group: common goal, social structure, face to face (or some form of) interaction, self categorisation. Individualist (perspective or researchers: different from individualist society, nothing more to a group than the people who are part of the group, we need psychology of individual, they don"t study group. Norms: norms are ways of specifying what are acceptable or unacceptable attitudes and behaviours of group members.
