Henry gustav molaison (hm) shortly before he underwent the experimental surgery in 1953. In 1933, henry m. had a bicycle accident and was unconscious for 5 min. Three years later he began to have minor seizures. By 21, he would have 10 minor attacks per day and 1 major per week. In 1953 (henry was 27), dr. scoville performed a bilateral medial temporal lobe resection. Seizure activity was greatly reduced but he developed a major loss of memory capacity. Lived with his family for a while but then transferred in a nursing home. Never asked for food or beverage, or to go to bed. H. m. memory disorder was selective in five important ways. Higher-order perceptual, motor, and cognitive functions not affected. The (cid:2)span(cid:3) of short-term memory was normal, but devastated by delays. Association of specific patterns of visual stimuli with specific motor sequences. Facts and events that require conscious recollection and that can be expresses explicitly.
