Texture segregation- allows us to see edges that are defined at a higher level, there are higher level forms. This doesn"t always occur, for example sometimes when objects are similar, they have the same features, it is harder to group and therefore see edges. So t and l are very similar in spatial relations so it"s hard to tell the edges between the groups of them compared to diagonal t"s and straight t"s. Spatial relations can be left right, on top of, below, in the middle of. When children have trouble reading it can be because of spatial relations (b and d are similar) Texture segregation only occurs when items are grouped due to similar features like line orientation, colour, size, round/straight. Another side effect of grouping occurs to produce illusory contours, necker cube and kanizsa triangle. The visual system puts things together even though they aren"t there. The 3rd side effect is figure ground grouping or segmentation.
