Visual Angle: tell you actual size, and how far away in
depth
-size constancy is the same
Ames Room: take away depth cues that the person would
usually use, giving the illusion that one figure is larger in
the room than the other
-this is taken from the visual angle of the peep-hole
observer looks through
-no depth cues, interpret actual size based on visual
angle
Shape Constancy: object is seen as being the same
shape, even though the retinal image changes shape
depending on the angle you view the object from
-different shape can produce the same retinal
projection (depending on orientation)
-same shape can produce different shaped retinal
projections (shape constancy, depending on orientation)
how is this achieved?
-when we look at the shape of an object, we look for
depth cues to help interpretation

-seeing an object as its whole, with all parts in
-knowing what to group together to form an image
-involves organizing the information in the picture as
different objects and what goes together
Object Recognition: involves seeing the object as a whole,
and then comparing the object to a long term memory
representation
Biederman Machine: strange machine, point is that we
store information about things we have seen, even if only
briefly
visual-motor coordination: moving your body appropriately
given what you see
-perceive object as whole, prior knowledge doesn't
matter
-can walk around things adequately
Two Approaches to Explaining Object Perception
Top-Down Theories: objects perceived based on past
knowledge
-visual illusions based on the surrounding information,
visual system recognizes numbers as numbers even
