Provides the building blocks of knowledge: often becomes the topic of translational research research that aims to translate the findings of pure research into useful applications for human kind, more vulnerable to vagaries of political regulation. Example the role of ach in memory (alzheimer"s disease) Applied research tries to answer a specific problem with direct benefit to humans. Uses the building blocks provided by pure research. Example developing a therapy such as a drug that will enhance the function of ach in the brains of alzheimer"s patients. Studies of biopsychology proceed along two lines of research. Simpler brains, more direct analysis > brain-behaviour relationships. Example - need to have converging evidence that explains how the rat brain applies to the human brain.
