PSYC 2450 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Suggestibility, Bsc Young Boys, Relational Aggression
Document Summary
Females and males are more similar than different. Sex: chromosomes, physical identity and hormones, a person"s biological identity, a person"s social and cultural identity. Gender role standards: behaviors, values, or motives a society considers more appropriate for a specific sex. Gender typing: process by which children acquire gender roles, understanding what it is to be a boy and what it is to be a girl, around 2 years old children start to differentiate between sex. Small but reliable psychological differences between sexes: verbal ability. Girls seem to show more verbal ability than boys (more of an advantage) Acquire language earlier and have more facility with it: visual/spatial abilities for the most part. Boys tend to have an advantage in tests of visual/spatial abilities. Not a big difference: mathematical ability. When boy are given tests of mathematics they outperform girls in arithmetic reasoning. Boys are more confident in mathematics than girls.
