Psychoanalytic approach to psychology basis of the psychoanalytic theory. Psychic energy source of energy in everyone: fuels motivation, aggressive acts, sexual acts. Psychic energy can be linked to instincts . Libido (life) reproductive, survival instinct, nourishment, likeliness, sexual energy. Thanatos (death) destruction to others and self. Psychic energy can be directed and redirected because limited amount within each person. Conscious contains thoughts, feelings, and perceptions you are presently aware of. Preconscious memories you can bring to mind if you so desire. Unconscious incest, hatred for family, childhood traumas, don"t have access to this. Primary process principle: thinking without logical rules of conscious thought (dreams/fantasies) Wish fulfillment: mental energy invested in fantasies for temporary satisfaction, mental imagery is common. Reality principle: understands ids urges conflict with social and physical reality. Secondary process thinking: development for strategies for solving problems and obtaining satisfaction. Example of this includes teasing sister more acceptable than hitting her. Super ego internalizes values and morals.
