A diagnosis works to classify disorders not people. 1/5 people experience mental illness in their life. Stigma negative attitudes towards mental illness based on prejudice or misinformation. Can result in prejudice labelling, discrimination, reduced help seeking, isolation. 1/6 of the 1/5 actually get adequate treatment for mental illness. Dissociate identity disorder (did) multiple personality disorder . Having 2 or more distinct identities each with pattern of perceiving, relating, and thinking about self/environment. 2 or more recurrently take control of person. Gaps in memory regarding personal information, daily events, and/or past trauma. Dissociate/disconnect during trauma so they do not feel pain. Females > males, females also have more identities. Report of sexual/physical abuse is high as well as repressed memories. 1+ identity is hostile/aggressive amnesia is common but not for hostile identity. Pharmacotherapy treat comorbid symptoms (2 types of mental illness = did + anxiety) Traits: high neuroticism, high self-criticism/perfectionism, low extraversion, low conscientiousness.
