Infancy: self as distinct from world, start to recognize that some things and people are there and some are not always there, ages 2-3: Shyness: chronic objective awareness social anxiety: shyness, discomfort/distress in interactions, or in the anticipation of them, evaluation apprehension (how other people judge us) Has an element of shyness at its core. Treating social anxiety disorder: cognitive-behaviour therapy, challenge thought distortions, exposure to fearful situations (gradual) Self-esteem: on a good-bad or like-dislike dimension, varies temporally but has average, varies by area of life or aspect of self. Low self-esteem: poorer performance & give-up: coheres with the view of themselves, high self-esteem: less likely to give-up & try just as hard, does not cohere with the view of themselves.
