Document Summary
A collective of two or more people working together interpedently to achieve a common goal. Three key features: interaction, interdependence, shared goals. A natural part of human interaction: a socializing mechanism for us, a place to exert social influence, common in organizations (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Formal groups: set by the organization to establish organizational goals: may be temporary or ongoing. Informal groups: set by the individual members due to natural circumstances or shared interests/goals: not sanctioned by the organization, can cut across formal group lines. Teams are a specific type of group: group people communicating and working together, team groups with a strong sense of shared values, commitment, and cohesion (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) A strong push in research and practice to foster more team-based approaches to work. Increasing demand for organizational flexibility: more complicated services and products, difficult to provide using traditional independent labour. Demand being met by using more groups: an increasing trend in industry.
