Tuesday, Feb 12, 2013 PSYC*3690 Community Mental Health Lecture #11 Term Paper - when you write your term paper based on the one or 2 prevention programs, you would be dumb not to classify your prevention program (primary, secondary) - depending on the prevention program, they may not identify mediators - have to be capable of proposing those mediators - 3 box model in the essay - first paragraph where you set out the aims of your paper e.g. address depression de- veloping in adolescence, roadmap of the sections - big on headings - depression, risk and protective factors (individual factors, family fac- tors, peer factors, life events and stressors), prevention programs for adolescent de- pression (the resourceful adolescent program) - talk about the design of the study, the aim of the study, the actual intervention, theory, program logic model (3 box design - use real boxes - intervention strategies, medita- tors, intervention outcomes, even though you have the boxes, walk the reader through them), critique of prevention programs for adolescent depression, conclusion - no extra points for doing 2 prevention programs, 1 will be enough - results - want to know if they are statistically significant - whether the intervention had an impact - if you don’t have any comments about it you won’t get an A - try to stay around 10 pages - have someone proofread your paper - for the articles in your reader, follow this framework Article #: Title: Goals Who Benefits? (Target Audience) Universal, Selective, or Indicated Primary, Secondary, Tertiary Risk and Protective Factors Measures of Data Collection (what is measured, # of times, and how) Intervention Strategies? Results (what did the program accomplish) Limitations Other Important Facts - on thursday walking through prevention of marital distress: a longitudinal investigation Midterms - midterms will never ever go for little details - need to know the basic concepts - 2 kinds of epidemiological study designs - mediational/2 box model - crisis intervention, suicide, why people don’t use mental health services, - midterm will be 10 questions, the last question will be the choice - all short answer, some can be bullet and some need explanations - the final will have the same core concepts but different readings - there will be big questions about the articles - what was the intervention, what was the population, how did they select the population, what did they use as evidence that they made a difference, classify them - articles will be referred to by title and description of parts of the study Suicide Among Native People - national disgrace that we have the kind of statistics that we do have on suicide in the north - close to 40 per 100,000 among the first nations in the year 1979-1993 - under 20 per 100,000 for the general population - suicide by province for males: 20 all of canada, 12 in newfoundland, 14 in ontario, 39 in Yukon, 136 nunavut, 139 in Nunavik - same thing for women, 5 in all of canada, 4 in Ontario, 29 in nunavut, 31 in nunavik Risk Factors for Suicide in Native People - drugs abuse and alcoholism - depression - boredom - search for a dulling of unpleasantness - psychiatric disorders - past attempts and past ideation - pathological gambling - issues related to parenting difficulties/incompetence - global warming - loss of culture - poverty Epidemiology of Depression - chart documents youth suicide rates by “Cultural Continuity Factors” - the more that native people have ownership/control over these cultural continuity fac- tors, the lower the suicide rate - these factors are: self-government, land claims, education, health, cultural facilitates, police/fire - the more of these cultural continuity factors that exist in a given community, the lower the suicide rate - as the number of cultural factors goes up, the suicide rate drops accordingly - where the community is more developed for taking control back, suicide decreases - if they have all 6 continuity factors, the incidence of suicide is extremely
