Learning disabilities refers to a variety of disorders that affect the acquisition, retention, understanding, organization or use of verbal and/or non-verbal info: impairment + average abilities, specific (not global) Doesn"t have to be an objective deficit. Superior ability in something (cid:224) true strength. Learning disabilities only get in the way when they interfere with out performance: how we find them. Learning disabilities range in severity and invariably interfere w/ the acquisition and use of one or more of the following important skills: oral language, reading, written language, mathematics (e. g. computation, problem solving, organizational skills, social skills. Dyslexia no longer exists; may be diagnosed as a reading disability. Exceptional learners are those who require special education services if they are to reach their full human potential: diversity of characteristics, need for special education. Assessment must show that learner is unable to make satisfactory progress without special education.
