The study of gender grew out of the second wave of the women"s movement. This movement critiqued academic disciplines that ignored women. In sociology, women were rarely the subjects of research and activities that were dominated by women. There was a male bias in sociology studies. Gender became a more used term in sociology, but there was still a divide and more attention was aimed at the factors that differed us from men. Recent conceptual developments: the sociology of women has given way to the sociology of gender, reflecting in literature relating male activities to masculinity.
