SOAN 2040 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Sweatshop
Document Summary
Yates lays out three types of jobs in chapter four. These jobs are good jobs, bad jobs, and dreadful jobs. i will define all three of these and give my opinion about yates" ideas, and whether or not his descriptions are fair. All of yates" jobs are supposedly sampled from the united states, so this list does not include third world sweatshop jobs. The good jobs are defined as work that requires intelligence with little danger or physical burden. These jobs include doctors, lawyers, financiers, politicians, computer specialists and many more. These professionals get to mentally exert themselves and execute their jobs, and they are relatively well paid for it. He hints at the idea that some financiers, politicians, and lawyers are not necessarily beneficial for everyone they effect, but for the most part they can be considered good jobs.
