Wednesday, sept 14 th lecture: the value of theory: the contemporary relevance of the old theory. Theories aren"t things we just think about they are models for social reality for why the things are the way they are in the world. **theories are explanations seen as models (how societies work) metaphors, identify and depicts patterns in social life. Social theories suggest causes (at the heart of theories), understand they whys. Limits where we go, some are better than others. Depends where to go determines how things turn out. What questions we ask, may yield particular results. Different sociological perspectives see problems in unique ways. The sociological imagination"- social science should aim at helping people understand their private troubles in terms of public issues (c. wright mills ) By looking at public issues we can refer to private lives and can help us understand we are the way we are and at particular times things happen to us.
