SOAN 2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Stratified Sampling, Sampling Frame, Convenience Sampling
Document Summary
Sample size in advance not known. Knowledge of population research gives a better understanding of the population. Such as picking people by random on a street. Hence this sample is not representative of the overall population. Ensures that certain quotas are met, such as half women and half men. However, after these quotas are met you use haphazard and accidental sampling. Uses judgement to select cases with a specific purpose in mind. The purpose is use to gain a deeper understanding of specific types: such as difficult to reach populations, collect as many samples as you can with your available resources. Similar to purposive sampling, but the researcher stops when the amount additional information is small or negligible. You evaluate the data and when you feel as though you have as much resource as you need, you stop. Uses referrals or networks in order to determine the sample.
