Determine what will observe and analyze why and how. 2 major tasks: specify clearly what you want to find out, determine the best way to do it. 3 purposes of research: exploration, description- reports on the characteristics of some population or situation/ even, you then observer or describe these situations or events, scientific explanations are more significant then casual ones. Why are some features characteristics of some areas but not of others. Why do some participate in certain activities while others do no. There is usually a casual, cause and effect element: often studies have more than one purpose. See the 3 purposes in other aspects of research design. The unit of analysis is the basic entity or object. About which generalisation are to be made based on an analysis and for which data have been collected (ie. the central focus of the study or an analysis.
