His aim was to develop a naturalistic science of society that would both explain the past development of human kind and predict the future. Tried to account for what is static in society, and makes it stable. Must be studied in the same way and same scientific manner as the world of nature. Would replace the anarchy of the old order. These facts cannot be observed without theory. We can improve, we can reconstruct society, we can predict and we can control. Felt positivist would lead to development to organic truths. Integration and harmony: discover underlying laws of the social order. France in the early 19th century- comte saw a state of anarchy in his time and believe his ideas would help bring order out of chaos. Wrote: cours de philosophie positive and catechisme positiviste. Ii) society of man- studied in the same way and same scientific manner as the world of nature.
