Romantic art (more about spiritual outlet for intellectuals who weren"t really religious). Early 1900s reaction against romanticism throw off the oppressive nature of 19th century, composers were fighting romantic past and romanticism within them since they wre moving away from wirting about inward sentimentality towards expression adn politics. Aritstsattempted to explore their basic impulses that were tamed by civilization artists were pissed at society for restraining them. Music turned to dynamisms of non-western rhythms, folk music of fury to fresh feelings of imagination. Music became machine music art was machine art. With mechaniation came the feeling that men had surrended his soul, machine in society a symbol of power and emotion. Symbol of energy, dehumanization of society adn the art reflects that. Melodies different too used to be tonal, became atonal (rules of harmony were rejected)
