Variables: continuous you can rank them in a numerical way (ex: education years, income dollars) If the variables are both quantitative you use a correlation to show the relationship: a positive slope implies a positive correlation and vice versa for negative, all scattered no relationship between the two variables (flat slope) If the relationship is linear then it makes sense to use a correlation coefficient: this is a summary of the measurements of the direction and strength.
