SOAN 2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: External Validity, Nvivo, Simple Random Sample
Document Summary
Chapter 9- sampling (covers qualitative and quantitative sampling) The purpose is less to generalize to the large population, and more to gain a deeper understanding of specific types. (examples- difficult to reach populations, go to places where they can be found, collect as many cases as possible. All the individuals are interrelated: deviant (extreme) case sampling design- study individuals that are outliers from the general dominant pattern. Which type of non-probability sample requires that the researcher continuously analyzes the information that each additional case contributes to the study: haphazard, snowball, sequential, purposive. Non probability samples: typically have a good idea of the size of the sample we need in. Our population is 10 times as large as our sample, therefore, our sample interval is 10: start with sample frame, number each element from 1-1000 and get a random number generator to pick a number, and then skip. Sampling designs are usually a tradeoff between representativeness and efficiency.
