Initially, shoe type categorization was to be based on the seven basic shoe styles ex. boot, clog, sandal, oxford, slipper, mule and moccasin. However, pilot studies revealed that a number of shoes could not be appropriately placed into one of these seven categories. Ordinal level of measurement no meaning y can look at indicators y ex. rank order. Indexes and scales y most common in survey research and other quantitative methods y often used in quantitative research because: Difficult to devise a single measure of complex concepts. Especially true with regard to attitudes and orientations. Some may require > 1 indicator of a variable ex. depression. Some may involve a number of dimensions that call for multiple indicators ex. compassion (feeling vs. action) Some may be concerned with degree to which a variable is present ex. physically fit y ordinal measures at minimum y.
