Sex is the product or effect of gender. Rather than sex being the basis for gender distinctions, it argues that gender is the basis for distinctions based on sex. The biological fact of male and female is a social construction. Intersex: both male/female genitalia; considered a medical problem. Now no intervention is provided unless the individual makes the choice. Gender identity disorder (gender dysphoria): when a male is exhibiting female qualities and vice versa. Their personality and desires don"t line up with their biological sex. Gender like race is a socially constructed identity. There are analogies with can draw between race and gender. For ex; its easier to modify gender than it is to modify race. Essentialism: the idea that there is a fixed set of traits attached to an identity or group. Gender essentialism: the idea that women are more nurturing, docile, etc.
