Soan2400 unit 3: femininities, masculinities and the intersections of sexualities. Cisgender: a label for an individual" self-perception and presentation of their gender matches the behaviours and roles considered normal for one"s sex. Transgender: an umbrella term for all those whose gender does not follow directly from the sex which they were assigned at birth. Can be assigned to those identifying as trans", gender queer, intersexual, female-to- male (ftm), male-to-female (mtf), butch, femme, drag queen, drag king, cross dresser, etc. Masculinity: the state or fact of being masculine; the assemblage of qualities regarded as characteristic of men; maleness, manliness. Femininity: behaviour or qualities regarded as characteristic of a woman; feminine quality or characteristics; womanliness. Hegemonic masculinity: the culturally idealized form of masculine character which emphasizes the connecting of masculinity to toughness and competitiveness as well as the subordination of women and the marginalization of gay men.
